One Heart World-Wide's mission is to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in remote rural areas. Our partnership with them is helping women in Bhojpur, Nepal receive skilled birth attendant training. SBA TrainingPregnancy is a natural process for which medical assistance is not considered as a need or requirement in Nepal. As a result, many Nepalese women, especially those residing in more rural areas of Nepal deliver at home. In most communities, traditional birth attendants are usually primary service providers who have never received modern training in midwifery. The lack of training poses a risk to the lives of the women and newborn. Currently, there are only a few SBAs that serve about 45,000 women per year in Bhojpur. One Heart World-Wide has identified several eligible nurses that are on their way to becoming certified skilled birth attendants. Post-training, they will be able to provide the maternity care necessary to conduct safe deliveries in this district. “This training was beneficial as we learned many clinical technicalities to save and protect both the mother’s and baby’s life. Before this training I was unable to handle the delivery complications. I was in a dilemma before, but now after getting this training I am confident in my ability to save the lives of mothers and newborns by giving them proper care as needed. Indeed SBA training has given me more strength and courage to save lives at birth.” Ms. Bishnu thinks that this training has solved a lot of problems that were present previously. “Before the training there used to be a lot of complications related to the delivery, which had to be referred to the district hospital for management. That took four hours by vehicle and 10 hours by foot. Pregnant women who are referred are always at risk during the transportation. SBA training has improved the way we take care of mothers and newborns by enabling us to manage birth complications locally, unless the case is too serious to be referred. I am really grateful to One Heart World-Wide for providing financial support for my SBA training, which is helping to save the lives of mothers and newborns in these remote rural areas of Bhojpur, Nepal during and after delivery.” UpdatesHere are some quick updates and snapshots of the work One Heart World-Wide has been doing in Bhojpur. 1) Healthcare Training2) Identifying Disadvantaged GroupsOur partnership with One Heart World-Wide is helping women in Bhojpur, Nepal receive skilled birth attendant training. January – April, 2016BackgroundBhojpur is a hill district located in the northeastern part of Nepal. It is home to 172,098 people, and reports 4,474 pregnancies per year. In 2014, One Heart World-Wide started the needs assessment process for this district, but due to the earthquakes that destroyed parts of Nepal in 2015, we had to pause our initial program activities and focus on districts such as Dhading and Sindhupalchok, where over 90% of the health facilities sustained either full or partial damage.
In late 2015, we started up our program activities in Bhojpur again, and in 2016, we have started rolling out the second phase of our Network of Safety – Program Implementation. Over the next three years, we will train community outreach providers, implement a community outreach program, upgrade health facilities into birthing centers, and train Skilled Birth Attendants. We will also develop a basic health infrastructure, provide health education, and foster community empowerment in collaboration with the local District Health Department. Our goal for the next five years is to double the rate of deliveries with a Skilled Birth Attendant, and reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality by at least 50%. Transparent Fish Fund granted $50,000 to One Heart World-Wide to fund the implementation of their Network of Safety Model in the district of Bhojpur for Phase 1 from November 2015-December 2016.
May 8th 2014, SANTA MONICA, CA -- Transparent Fish Fund and the Chao Foundation sponsored One Heart Worldwide's Annual Grateful Heart Gala by providing a dollar-for-dollar matching grant for all donations up to $500. The sold-out event included a live band and silent auction, and was hosted by celebrity guest emcee Carrie-Anne Moss. All proceeds went towards One-Heart's unique programs dedicated towards preventing the deaths of mothers and infants in remote rural communities around the world. This is our second year working with One-Heart World Wide. Last year we donated a total of $50,000 that went to neonatal programs in Mexico and Nepal. Their life-saving programs were initially established in the late 1990’s in the Tibetan Autonomous Region and in the last ten years, they have been able to decrease unattended home births from 85% to 20%, mostly by ensuring the presence of a skilled attendant at delivery. They also work closely with local communities and health providers to develop a culturally appropriate "Network of Safety" around mothers and infants. Based on their years of experience, One Heart has developed an effective, replicable, and sustainable model to reduce preventable deaths related to pregnancy and delivery among vulnerable rural populations. One Heart World-Wide works to decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in remote rural areas around the world.
-- Dear Friends, In the short time that we have been working in Baglung, Nepal, our programs have made a significant impact. As the first site to begin program implemenation after transitioning out of Tibet, we are finally able to see the long-term effects of the Network of Safety on the communities in which we work. We have successfully reduced both maternal and neonatal mortality by close to half in our Baglung program area. We have been able to change birth outcomes for women in Baglung through the dedication and hard work of our team and network of volunteers, but none of it would have been possible without the incredible support of people like you. It is for this reason that I ask for your support once more at the annual Grateful Heart Gala in Los Angeles on May 3rd. We need your support in order to reach more women in the most remote regions of Nepal and in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. We want to see the same results for the mothers and newborns in all of our program areas, and to be able to bring the Network of Safety to new places where communities are in need. Now that our model has been proven once again in a new location, we are more dedicated than ever to our mission to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in remote regions of the world. By showing up at our event, you will be showing your support for our programs, the women and newborns we serve, and mothers across the globe - plus you can have some fun while you're at it! We have a fantastic evening planned, from the food and our musical guests to the auction items we have lined up. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Mother's Day this year. I hope to see you there. All my best, Arlene Please follow the link to make a donation and get matched dollar for dollar: http://www.tfishfund.org/one-heart.html |
